The Proverbs 31 Woman (Savvy & Skillful)

The modern-day Proverbs 31 Woman
Savvy and Skillful

Women often feel tremendous pressure to live up to the high standards society has set for them. In today's world, women are expected to be exceptional wives, mothers, entrepreneurs, full-time employees, have a tiny waist with the perfect body, hold everything down for the family, and always look flawless. That's the shortlist! The truth is society today puts more focus on looks instead of loyalty and emphasizes curves instead of character.

But by what standards should women truly live? I believe the answer is found in the Proverbs 31, woman.

The Proverbs 31 woman is the perfect example of what our standards for ourselves should look like. If you've ever read the characteristics of the Proverbs 31 woman, it can feel intimidating and overwhelming. But that is not the purpose of the Passage. Instead of feeling as if we can't measure up, we should feel inspired. The Proverbs 31 woman is Fearless, Faith-filled, and Empowered. She has a strong character, is wise, has many usable skills, and is faithful to her family and God. The Proverbs 31 woman is a woman of God. She seeks him and his guidance daily. She prays consistently and inspires anyone in her path. Think about it. She is the woman we all desire to be. When it comes to career, finance, Faith, and relationships, She has it all together! So how can we do the same?

There are many aspects of the virtuous woman that we can explore. But because so many women are pushing to excel in their career or entrepreneurship, we will look at her work ethic and businesswoman skills to see how it relates to us today.

Below are verses from Proverbs 31 that reference her as having a strong work ethic and being a skilled entrepreneur.

13 she selects wool and Flax and works with eager hands.

So you may be wondering what is wool and flax used for and why this matters to me today. It matters because it shows us she is a creative. She uses these items to make clothing.
Wool was taken from sheep to make clothing for the cold, and flax was used to making lighter materials such as linen for warmer weather. It says she worked eagerly with her hands which tells us making clothes for her family was not a burden but a blessing.

15 She gets up while it is still night
The word night means before sunrise. The Proverbs 31 woman is an early riser. This is key and directly relates to women in business because it is essential to get a jumpstart on the day to experience success. Having a morning routine that includes prayer is a great way to start the day. I recommend waking up two hours early to have ample time to pray and prepare for the day ahead.

16 She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings, she plants a vineyard
Let's review this verse carefully; It says she considers; this means she thought about it and used Godly wisdom to make the best decision. She did not act on impulse and let emotions lead her. Instead, she made the best judgment call on which field to buy using wisdom. The next portion says she buys the field out of her earnings. Can you say BOSS MOVE? She not only is a phenomenal wife and mother, but she makes her own money and invests in something that has longevity. Today, we need to seek Godly wisdom and ask for guidance regarding our purchases. Buying clothes, shoes and jewelry are all nice but are you investing in something that can be built upon and will continue to grow tomorrow? Finally, it says, "she plants a vineyard." She does not restrict herself and her family to the bare necessities; instead, by planting a vineyard, her family will continue to enjoy the fruits of her labor (literally) for decades to come.

17 She sets about her work vigorously her arms are strong for the task
Here we are led back to her admirable work ethic. The word vigorously means carried out forcefully and energetically. To me, this means she pushed through. Have you had those days where you were exhausted? You already completed a million things, but it seemed the to-do list was not getting shorter? That is when you need to work vigorously ( carry out the task with force aka push through) The second part her arms are strong for the task is reassurance that she's built to see the task through to completion. The good news is you are too.

These next two verses focus on the Proverbs 31 woman as an entrepreneur.

18 She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night
Other translations read She makes sure her dealings are profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. I believe in this verse so much that I designed a t-shirt for women with this same statement. The Passage goes so much deeper than her being an entrepreneur. Still, because we believe in keeping the main thing the main thing around here, we will only explore the entrepreneurial aspects of this scripture since that is the focus here. Seeing that her trading is profitable shows us that she makes wise investment choices, only involved in business transactions that will yield her a return. Ok, so, to be honest, there are so many translations of the next part, her lamp does not go out at night. Huh? That is probably what your thinking. Does she ever sleep? Of course, she does. This means she continues to work through the night if needed to live out her life purposefully. The lamp illustrates that she is unwavering in her commitment to serving her family and God even if she has to work into the night to get it done.

Ok, so we will wrap it up with verse 24 that further shows her as an entrepreneur.

24 She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes
She makes the clothing and sells them to merchants—a merchant sells goods at a wholesale price. Today we call merchants vendors. Which means she is the manufacturer (#GOALS) making the goods and supplying vendors with the product, ultimately resulting in customer purchases. The Proverbs 31 woman is loyal, committed o God, wise, and successful. Proverbs 31 ends by stating honor her for all that her hands have done and letting her work bring her praise at the city gate.

So are you ready to be a Proverbs 31 woman? I know it seems like a lot to live up to, but the truth is we can do anything with God's help. Being a Proverbs 31 woman does not mean living for perfection; it means living for purpose.
